Death Valley

We started the day in Panamint Springs just west of Death Valley. At 5 AM, as we got into the car, the temperature was a very comfortable 81º. Twenty minutes later, after climbing 5000 feet to the rim of the mountains overlooking Death Valley, the temp was down to 59º. From there we dropped down to 100 feet below sea level in Stovepipe Wells, and the temperature was up to 88º! (It was still a half an hour before dawn.) Later in the day the highest temperature we saw on the car thermometer was 109º.
